2012 UFO Challenge for May

Shadow Blocks

I'm taking part in Judy Laquidara's UFO Challenge at Patchwork Times.
I did get the top finished but unfortunately it did not get to the Long Arm Quilter as yet.  But it will!
The back is done and the binding is ready to go on.

Shadow Blocks top
Number 2 was picked for May and this is what I started out with.  I decided to only use 12 of the blocks in the front but added 3 to the back.

Have a great day,

Terry

One Step at a Time

Quilt #89
One Step at a Time

I made this quilt while teaching my first Mystery Class, in 1995 when mystery classes were very popular.
Sawtooth Star and Square-in-a-Square Blocks

I used two traditional blocks, Sawtooth Star and Square-in-a-Square and added four borders, with the second one being a sawtooth made up of half-square triangles.

borders, binding and quilting

Only four fabrics were used for this quilt, I very seldom make quilts using so few fabrics.

One of the fabric was a Jinny Beyer print and I was very disappointed to see it really faded when the other fabrics did not.

For the back, I stitched 5 panels of the 2 pink fabrics that was used on the front.

back
The long arm quilting pattern used here is called Tassels and was quilted by Marnie Mascioli of Calico Cat Quilting.

This quilt was a long time getting finished and longer still getting quilted and the reason why I name it One Step at a Time.

That's all for now.

May's FMQ Challenge with Leah Day and Best Friends

These are my first sample pieces using Leah Day's tutorial technique of double stippling. I realized after I completed these that I had covered the whole area a little too well and lost the look of the double stippling.

Double Stippling and Railroad Tracks
So I gave it another try and liked this a lot better.

Second attempt
Quilt #88 - Best Friends

In keeping with my plan of finishing a UFO using the technique of the month, I picked this lap size Trip Around the World. This was started as a demo for a class. This is a fun technique that I've taught several times.

Sue Nickels shared her method of making this in Quilt Craft magazine back in the nineties sometimes.

Best Friends

This is all that was done when I rescued it from the cupboard.

UFO
I also made a sample to see how the technique and thread would work. This is 100% cotton thread and I like OK except for all the lint it produced in the machine.

Here is what the quilting looks like on the quilt top.

I have been following Leah Day for a long time and have used many of her designs on my quilts.  This one was fast and easy as an all over pattern.  Thank you, Leah.

Black Magic

Quilt #87
Black Magic

It's a king size Stack 'n Whack. Made in 1999, shortly after Bethany S. Reynolds' book Magic Stack -n- Whack Quilts was published.

I like the Zebra fabric, it made interesting blocks with lots of variety.

The pattern is the Half-Square Triangle Magic from the book.

close-up of blocks
I used a couple of the blocks that did not make the cut for the front of the quilt ,added some triangles to make a pinwheel design for the back.

Black Magic - back

Those blocks also doubled as my label.  I stitched some information on the bottom of each block.

Borders and Zebra fabric

I free motion quilted this quilt on my Husqvarna domestic sewing machine. I quilted some of the designs in the stars and stippled the background using invisible nylon thread on the top and black polyester on the back.

Birches

Quilt # 86

I love this little quilt,  only 20" x  19¼”, probably because I love working with neutrals.

Birches

Birches was inspired by the many clumps of birches local to our area.

A piece of my own hand dyed suggested trees in the background. I added a few bits of fabric and stitching to complete the background. The foreground was covered with snippets (small pieces of several fused fabrics) and stitched down.

close-up

The tree trunks were made individually using a “crackled” fabric fused to a stiff interfacing to which I added the marks on the trunks. These were than arranged and stitched on to the background and I used Shiva oil paint sticks to create the shadowing and darkened areas on the trunks.

A skinny little border framed the piece and once the quilting was completed, the wider border was turned to the back as a binding.

Arizona Show 'n Tell

While visiting my daughter in Scottsdale, last month, she introduced me to her friend, Pam, who happens to be a quilter.

Pam very graciously invited Lissa and I, along with some of her quilting friends for a lovely evening.

Everyone brought quilts for Show 'n Tell while sharing a glass of wine, ending the night with a yummy strawberry dessert.

Here's a sampling:

I so enjoyed meeting everyone and hope to see you again on my next trip south. Thank you for everything, ladies.
