I'm taking part in Judy Laquidara's UFO Challenge at Patchwork Times.

Click here to see who else completed their UFOs.  Number 9 is next, another
O'Tannenbaum for me.

Top done and sandwiched

I did get the top finished, sandwiched and 7 of the blocks are quilted. I still have to come up with a name for this one.

Here it is as a work in progress. The blocks were all made, ready to set.

October's 2012 FMQ Challenge with Teri Lucas

October Challenge - Teri Lucas

This is my sample for Teri Lucas' s Challenge for October 2012 FMQ Challenge at Insights from SewCalGal.

I started with drawing a sketch.

sketch
Teri suggested silk with cotton and wool batting, all of which I had, so I made my sandwich, marked my square and gathered up as many different kinds of threads that I thought would work for this project. I changed thread with each design but used Bottom Line only in the bobbin.

Threads used

Here's a couple of close-ups:

Teri suggested using the rest of our piece for further experimenting, so I did a practice run of a feather design that I want to use on a quilt I'm currently quilting.

I tried some echo quilting on one side but did not care for it.

This is Diane Gaudynski's design that she calls Diane-shiko which I just love doing it and really like how it sets off other designs.

Blogger’s Quilt Festival :: Fall 2012

A World of Their Own

Blogger's Quilt Festival Stats

Finished quilt measures : 24” x 16”
Special techniques used : Painted with Tsukineko Inks from own photograph
Quilted by : Terry Whyte
Best Category : Favorite Art Quilt, Favorite Home Machine Quilted Quilt, Favorite Wall Hanging

close-up

This quilt was painted  with Tsukineko Inks in a class with Patt Blair in April, 2002, at the Empty Spools Seminar in Asilomar, California.

I always knew I wanted to make a quilt from this picture and when Patt told us we could use one of our own photographs for this class, I knew right away that it was going to be this one of my grandson Mackie with Bailey sitting on the front of our pontoon boat.

Work in progress

Most of the painting of this quilt was done in class. I did darken the water quite a bit after getting home before free motion quilting it.

I used a variety of thread for the quilting: a variegated YLI Variations for Bailey, the dog, several WonderFil Rayons and Invisafil for Mackie and Valdani Hand-Overdyed for the water.

More info and photos HERE where I documented this quilt in June, 2012.

I am linking Blogger's Quilt Festival.

Thanks for coming over.

Fancy Curves

Quilt #106
Fancy Curves

Fancy Curves was a class sample in curved piecing, embellishing by hand and machine as well as a fused and machine stitched binding.

There is curved piecing on the background as well as in squares.

curved piecing

The background was quilted adding some decorative machine stitching as well as a couple of rows of hand whipped running stitches. The squares were embellished with french knots , fused and stitched onto the background with a blanket stitch.

The binding is fused, cut with a curved rotary blade and topstitched using a decorative machine stitch.

embellishments and binding

The beading was added after all the machine stitching was completed.

Fancy Curves - back

I added a curved piece to the back just for fun.

Seashell Cosmos

Quilt # 105

Seashell Cosmos
This is the photo that I took in my garden and the inspiration for this quilt.

seashell cosmos photo

Seashell Cosmos was an experiment using a technique that I believe is called Appliquilt.

Here's a couple of close-ups:
applique using blindstitch
All the pieces are fused to the background, then the quilt sandwich is made and the applique is stitched in place and the whole thing is quilted at the same time.

backgroung quilting and binding
The quilting design is from Leah Day called Roots.

I use ExtravOrganza for a lot of my labels on wallquilts,  it is attached to paper that goes through the printer.   Just print, remove and iron on.

Swastika United Church

Quilt # 104

Swastika United Church - front

This little 12” x 12” quilt was made as part of a Miniature Guild Challenge. Members were divided into groups of 4 or 5. Our group chose “buildings” as our theme.

I used a photoshop program to turn my photo into a sketch, reversed it and printed it onto stabilizer. I stitched from the back and then added details using a fine line marker and a little colour using fabric colouring pencil.

Swastika United Church - back

I entered all the information that would usually be on a label in my machine and embroidered it in black thread in a circle around the design.

I quilted three different designs in the background using white thread on white fabric.

A black and grey stripe was used for the binding.

This little church was part of our lives when we live in Swastika even though we were not members of that church.

My husband and I led a Cub Pack there for many years and attended many community events where everyone was always made welcomed

Shadow Blocks

Quilt # 103

Shadow Blocks - front
This sampler was on my UFO Challenge list at Patchwork Times. I completed the top before the end of May which is when the quilt was supposed to be completed, but it wasn't quilted or bound.

But it is now. Has been for a while, just haven't got around to post about it.

My blocks were made while teaching a sampler class. There are still a few stacks of blocks sitting around from more classes.

Here are some close-up of some of the blocks:

Grandmother's Flower Garden
Paper-pieced Summer's Sun
Breadfruit Applique
Set-in Seam Stripped 8-point Star
Star of Hearts

Since I used the same fabric for the lattice that is in the background of the blocks I added a row of machine embroidery to define the blocks.
machine embroidery around block

Shadow Blocks - back
I decided to only use 12 blocks on the front of the quilt but added 3 more to the back and used the Schoolhouse roof as my label.

Red Sky at Night

Mixed Media #4

Red Sky at Night

Red Sky at Night is the fourth piece I made using the techniques from Angie Hughes' book “Stitch, Cloth, Paper & Paint”. Blogging about these pieces has made me realize that I really want to experiment with more of this.

The background was stitched and painted (as per Construction Techniques below) in an abstract way. I embroidered both free motion and using decorative stitches on my machine, couched strings before painting the background.

detail - tree

The tree was appliqued and thread painted, as was the grasses and background trees.

This piece was professionally framed.

O Tannenbaum IV - September's UFO

Quilt # 102.

This is my UFO Challenge 2012 for September, a challenge issued by Judy Laquidara at Patchwork Times.  Have a look and see who else completed some UFOs.

O Tannenbaum IV
#11 is done!

O Tannenbaum IV is the fourth in a series of stylized trees.
See    I and II here   and    III here.

detail of the free motion feather quilting

This is what I started out with this month:

I added the four corner triangles using the 2 batiks that were in the block and then 2 borders from my hand dyed fabrics.

The back was pieced from hand dyed fabrics and some left-over batik from the front.

quilt back

I quilted feathers learned from Diane Gaudynski's online tutorial and stippling in the background very much like O Tannenbaum III.

quilting on back

I stitched the quilt information on one of the pieces before stitching the back together instead of adding a separate label. Much easier.
instead of label

One more of these to go, I'm really liking the finished products and love quilting feathers.
Number 6 is next and the one I have been dreading.

Until next time,

Terry
