A Bygone Era: Mine Shafts

Quilt # 82

Done!!!

This is my #8  in the UFO Challenge 2012 for March . A challenge issued by Judy Laquidara at Patchwork Times. Click the orange 2012 UFO Challenge button at right for more info.

A Bygone Era: Mine Shafts

This is what it looked liked at the time.  Notice there was an extra column of flying geese on the left hand side?

pre-challenge
After having it sandwiched and started quilting, I had a good look at it to try and figure out what I did not like about it.
auditing

I folded the border over that column of geese and liked it a lot better.  So I remove the flying geese and replaced the border before doing anymore quilting.  Much better, don't you think?

Red Placemats & March's Free Motion Challenge with Ann Fahl

These two pictures are from my March's Free Motion practice piece for the 2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge.

I have been free motion quilting for a long time and it never occurred to me to combine the Loopy loop and stippling, which Ann calls Loop and Twist. I was having so much fun adding Ann's suggested designs to the Loop and Twist and then several of my own, it was hard to stop.

I used a wool batting and YLI Variations multi coloured variegated thread on my sample. I love how the colours of the thread show up on my hand dyed which is mostly pink and blue fabric.

Quilt #80

Red Placemats

Continuing with my plan of finishing one of my UFOs using the month's challenge, I picked these red placemats to quilt.

Six red placemats

These were cut from a large quilt top I had made and really did not like A LOT.

Big ugly quilt!

See what I mean!

I cut it all up to make several sets of placemats. I have completed a set of 4 and a set of 8 using the pieces on the front and the back.

Cut up for placemats

This set of six is the last and I used a fun chinese food fabric for the back.

back
The back fabric was wrapped around to the front and stitched down using a programmed decorative stitch on my machine.

front
I used Thermolam and red YLI Variations 2 ply Trilobol polyester.

I really enjoyed quilting these doodles.  Easy, flowing, and relaxing.
Thank you, Ann.

Snail's Pace

Quilt #80

Snail's Pace

Snail's Pace was made as an entry for  a challenge issued by Mongrain Textile, New Liskeard in 2004. The flowered fabric in red, yellow and blue was the challenge fabric and 4 other fabric could be added.

I pieced the challenge fabric as well as three of my own, in a spiral shape.
I then cut my dot “background” into another spiral shape and raw edge appliqued it on top of the pieced area. This was zigzagged in place.

back
The part I like best about this little quilt is the quilting, it shows well on the back.

The label was made from the cut out centre piece of the spiral.

Celebration

Quilt #79

Celebration

Celebration was the very first quilt for which I won a prize. It was exciting and encouraged me to enter more challenges and competitions.

March 2001, Quilts and other Comforts of North Bay, ON celebrated their 25 year anniversary and issued the Anniversary Quilt Challenge.

This quilt won $250. worth of fabric as the grand anniversary prize.

A purchased kit comprised of the four top pieces of fabric below, three other fabric of your choice could be used to complete your challenge.  The quilt had to be an original design.

The Quilt Challenge Wall hanging winner had to agree to the quilt being donated to The Quilt, A Celebration of Survivors, A Breast Cancer Support Project.

This was a quilt as you go, as each strip was added.  Some stippling was done in the bargello design and fireworks were added in metallic threads.

Moonlight Solitude

Quilt # 78

Moonlight Solitude

This was a monochromatic challenge taken on by members of the Northern Ontario Fibre Artists. Each member supplied a piece of fabric, 14” x 14” in the colour of their choice. The piece was then exchanged between members who each added “something” to it. The first addition usually sets the theme for the whole quilt. Only shades of the background fabric could be used.

This is what it looked like when I got it back.

Kit appliqued the tree and painted the tree line, as well as some shading in the background.
Jane added the clouds made of dryer lint covered with tulle and stitching.
Marnie beaded the moon.

Karen added a silver lame hill to ground the tree.
Silvia appliqued the canoe along with some weeds and ripples.
Marie embroidered some trees along the water's edge and birds flying in the moonlight.

We could then finish it in any way we wanted.

I added the white line dividing the ground from the water.
Painted the moon white and rubbed some of the paint off to still see the shine on the beads. Also painted the moon's reflection in the water. I added small borders at top and bottom and quilted it.

After binding it, I thought it still needed something, so I added the “rock” beads along the bottom border.
