My prompt this time was to add wood to a project.

I chose to make 4 little journals and make the covers from red oak which my husband cut and planed for me. I drilled the holes for the binding that I wanted to make, all different.   I also gave both sides of the covers two coats of varnish.

For the pages I recycled all kinds of paper, cutting each piece 8” x 6” and folding in half to make my 4” x 6” pages. I made 8 signatures of 8 pages for each book.

Each book has 128 pages.

The binding is called a “coptic binding” and is ideal for pages that lay flat, making easy for drawing, painting or writing.

Here are some of the different papers I used.

These kind of book are also called Junk Journals because of the recycled paper used.
I'd rather call mine Art Journals.

 The prompt for this week is to use some type of tape in an art project.

I did take some work in progress photos, but unfortunately the card wasn't in the camera. I hate it when that happens. I did my best here to walk you through the process.

Good old masking tape was my choice to make 3-D flowers on my book cover. I did a little sample and found that one layer just did not do it, so I cut through several layers of tape with an x-acto knife to get my petals.

Next step was to add a layer or two of gesso and then paint the flowers and background with acrylic paints.

When that was dry, I used a paint knife to apply a rough layer of modelling clay around the edges overlapping some of the flowers.

I sanded it down and covered it with FW acrylic ink and a little white paint along the edge of the modelling clay.

I had used 2 layers of cardboard for the covers but it wasn't very strong so I covered the inside covers with a type of mat board.

Last was a few layers of matte Mod Podge

I made 8 signatures from sketching paper.

I wanted to make a coptic binding for this book because it lets the book open flat for use. Utube to the rescue.

Upcycling #2 – Book and Binder Covers

Last year, I took part in the Free Motion Quilting Challenge at Insights from SewCalGa and in the process ended up with lots of “samples”.

What a shame not to use them for something!

So, this is a book cover made from the Tiles challenge by Angela Walters.  The quilting design in the tile is Leah Day's design "H2O"

Here's what I used, minus the small blue scrap which I did not need.

Supplies

I measured the book and added seam allowances.  I cut the quilted portion longer so that it would turn in about one inch on the inside covers.  Added extensions and turned under.

BINDERS

I like to use binders to store instructions, class information, etc.

Here's three different options I used to make binder covers: orphan blocks, pieced strips left-over from making a quilt, even placemats.

Take a Stitch Tuesday

Stitch 23 – Cable Chain Stitch

I thought this worked fairly well as a filler stitch. Needs blocking.

Accordion Books

I've decided to make little books from my samples for a stitch library.

After embroidering the name at the bottom of each sample using the alphabet stitches on my sewing machine, I glued them onto 6” cardboard squares and backed them with batik.

I stitched 6 samples into each book, accordion style.

NOFA Book Challenge - Textures

This is another NOFA challenge, made in 2009.. (see previous post for Green Challenge)

NOFA stands for Northern Ontario Fibre Artists, a group of seven from 3 Northern Ontario communities, Englehart, Kenogami, and Timmins. We meet 3 or 4 times a year to exchange ideas, show and tell about whatever we are dabbling in at the time and enjoy each other's company.

We also like to challenge ourselves to try new techniques. There always seems to be a challenge in the works.

For the Book Challenge each person chose a theme and made a cover for the “pages” that were going to be made by everyone else. The size of the cover determined the sizes the pages had to be made.

My book measures 9” x 13” and the pages are 8” x 11”.

The theme for my book is Textures.

THE COVER

For my cover I wove together 2 1/2” strips of fabric which I then stamped. I added loose threads, trims, even small crocheted flowers and covered the whole thing with tulle. I free motion quilted, outlining some of the stamped designs and filling in with as many designs as I could think of.

The inside of the cover is one my hand dyed. Two of the edges were shaped in a curved designs and zigzagged with variegated thread.

I made a button from FIMO modelling clay and added a couple of beads to the end of a sparkly string to wrap around and hold the book closed.
