My personal quilting challenge for 2014 was to make a quilt for each one of my six grandchildren.

This is #5 and is Maxie's quilt. It was actually completed in 2012 as part of a UFO Challenge. I don't feel like I will ever see the end of my UFOs but I'm trying.

And this is #6, for Massimo,  the last of my grandchildren's Christmas quilts. This was another Judy Laquidara challenge. It was the January block for Scrappy Challenge 2014 and was actually the first one I made as a grandkid quilt.

My personal quilting challenge for 2014 was to make a quilt for each one of my six grandchildren. This is #4 and is for my granddaughter, Emma.

This quilt's history goes back a long ways.

I actually forgot I had made these blocks and found them while rummaging through a box of miscellaneous bits and pieces.

They were from a Mystery Quilt found in a Canadian quilting magazine (name??) in the early nineties when I first started quilting. This was the first I had heard of a mystery quilt and was quite intrigued with the whole process. I did get the blocks made, and there was a whole lot of small squares and strips cut -  but that's as far as the project got.   I stitched the strips end to end for the outer border.

A lot of the fabrics are polyester, but back then I used what I could find at our two local fabric shops and there was not a lot of cotton to be found. I don't really have a problem with the fact that the fabric is polyester other than it is harder to handle and doesn't press well.

I chose several different turquoise fabrics for the lattice to brighten up the blocks.

My husband has travelled all over the world with his work and has surprised me a few time with pieces of fabric from different countries. The back and binding of Emma's Quilt is made from a piece of cotton that he brought back from India a few years ago.

The quilting is a simple grid - stitched in the ditch.

Back Home!

After spending almost 3 weeks in California and Arizona, it's back to the deep freeze and lots of snow. 

Oh well, more time for quilting and playing with artsy stuff!

My personal quilting challenge for 2014 was to make a quilt for each one of my six grandchildren.

“Medallion” was made for my grandson Mackie and Jesse, who recently moved into their new home. I found out that the decorating was heading towards a neutral palette with touches of copper.

I made this Medallion top a few years ago when teaching classes from my own original design.

The colour scheme was just right, so I took it to Marnie, for long arm quilting.  The back is extra wide flannel, the binding is a solid black cotton.

All I needed to do was square it up, add the binding and a label.

My personal quilting challenge for 2014 was to make a quilt for each one of my six grandchildren.

Red Stars at Night was made for Matthew, a 25 year old bachelor who owns his own home. His living room colour scheme is black and white with red accents.

Judy Laquidara's February Scrappy Challenge Block was perfect for this quilt.

I placed the blocks on point and filled in with plain black on point squares.  The four-patches were all made with brown or black prints and white-on-white, white beige or grey prints

By the way, he's my oldest grandson and the one who gave me my "grandma" name.  When he started talking he called me Samma and it has stuck to this day with all the grandkids.

I bought this little panel several years ago. I thought it would be fun to make as my husband is a pilot.

Last year, I added the border and sandwiched the layers and never got any further.

So this year, I quilted it and added a fused binding and a couple of little tabs to hang it from.

There was a lot of sewing going on for Christmas gifts this year.

I designed and made 4 sets of 8 placemats, that's 32 in all.

I was in such a hurry to get one set on its way that I didn't get a picture. These were in brown and rusty orange in colour.

I dyed some brown muslin for the backs all of these, and the quilting was simply stitch-in-the-ditch and a free motion feather on the accent and adjoining strips.

#154 - Skinny Strips Placemats

This technique is from Kathleen Loomis at Art with a Needle.  She has a tutorial on sewing skinny strips.  I think she may call them Fine Lines.   Thanks Kathy.

I found this fun fabric for the skinny strips and the backs of these. I was intending on adding more strips but  really liked this look, so I stopped there.  

These were broken up in 2 sets of four for my two grandsons who now have their own places.

I had a great time sewing with fleece, so easy! I made some neck warmers and a few kiddie scarves as well as over 20 Beanie hats, some with flower embellishments for the girls.

I also ventured into the infinity scarf world making half a dozen of those, unfortunately did not take any photos of any of the sewing projects.

O Tannenbaum IV - September's UFO

This is what I started out with this month:

I added the four corner triangles using the 2 batiks that were in the block and then 2 borders from my hand dyed fabrics.

The back was pieced from hand dyed fabrics and some left-over batik from the front.

I quilted feathers learned from Diane Gaudynski's online tutorial and stippling in the background very much like O Tannenbaum III.

I stitched the quilt information on one of the pieces before stitching the back together instead of adding a separate label. Much easier.

One more of these to go, I'm really liking the finished products and love quilting feathers.
Number 6 is next and the one I have been dreading.

O Tannenbaum III

This is my UFO Challenge 2012 for April. A challenge issued by Judy Laquidara at Patchwork Times.

#10 – DONE!

This is my fourth UFO to be completed. I finished March's before the deadline but could not link it up as I was travelling and had no computer access.

O Tannenbaum III is (obviously) the third in a series of stylized trees. O tannenbaum I was made up of 4 blocks as a Christmas table topper. I had good intentions of making another one and made 4 more blocks but did not like them together, so I will make 4 wall hangings. (2 down – 2 to go)   See I and II here.

This is what I started out with this month:

I found another batik in the 'right' colours and added 2 borders.

The quilting features some feathers as learned from the Diane Gaudynski free motion quilting workshop, and stippling in the background. Love quilting feathers!

The back is made up of a piece of hand dyed and left-overs from the front.

65 - Christmas Wreath

Can't remember where I found the pattern, but I still rather like this one. 

The 3-D Bow just adds a little something to the ribbon border.

Again, a mixture of cotton and polyester, some machine quilting, some hand quilting.

Measures 30” x 30”.

66 - Christmas Bells

Christmas Bells

The Christmas Bells was the first Holiday wall hanging I ever made.

It is hand appliqued and has white pompons for the bell clappers.

Most of the fabric is polyester, the bells are cotton, measures 20” x 25”

The writing was hand embroidered and it was very sparsely hand quilted around the designs.

The pattern was from the very first quilting book I ever bought and it was not easy to come by, there were very few quilting books or magazine available in Canada in the late eighties.

We've come a long way, baby.
