Spiderwebs & Winter Blues

Quilts for Christmas

My personal quilting challenge for 2014 was to make a quilt for each one of my six grandchildren.

Spiderwebs

Spiderwebs

This is #5 and is Maxie's quilt. It was actually completed in 2012 as part of a UFO Challenge. I don't feel like I will ever see the end of my UFOs but I'm trying.

I changed the name to Spiderwebs. I blogged about it here.

And this is #6, for Massimo,  the last of my grandchildren's Christmas quilts. This was another Judy Laquidara challenge. It was the January block for Scrappy Challenge 2014 and was actually the first one I made as a grandkid quilt.

I changed the name of this one also.   See more about it here.

Emma's Quilt

Quilt Documentation #185
Emma's Quilt

Quilts for Christmas

My personal quilting challenge for 2014 was to make a quilt for each one of my six grandchildren. This is #4 and is for my granddaughter, Emma.

This quilt's history goes back a long ways.

I actually forgot I had made these blocks and found them while rummaging through a box of miscellaneous bits and pieces.

They were from a Mystery Quilt found in a Canadian quilting magazine (name??) in the early nineties when I first started quilting. This was the first I had heard of a mystery quilt and was quite intrigued with the whole process. I did get the blocks made, and there was a whole lot of small squares and strips cut -  but that's as far as the project got.   I stitched the strips end to end for the outer border.

Close-ups of a couple of blocks:

A lot of the fabrics are polyester, but back then I used what I could find at our two local fabric shops and there was not a lot of cotton to be found. I don't really have a problem with the fact that the fabric is polyester other than it is harder to handle and doesn't press well.

I chose several different turquoise fabrics for the lattice to brighten up the blocks.

My husband has travelled all over the world with his work and has surprised me a few time with pieces of fabric from different countries. The back and binding of Emma's Quilt is made from a piece of cotton that he brought back from India a few years ago.

The quilting is a simple grid - stitched in the ditch.

And here's the label:

I was quite happy with the way it turned out and Emma loved it!

Red Stars at Night

Quilt Documentation #182

Red Stars at Night

Quilts for Christmas

My personal quilting challenge for 2014 was to make a quilt for each one of my six grandchildren.

Red Stars at Night was made for Matthew, a 25 year old bachelor who owns his own home. His living room colour scheme is black and white with red accents.

Judy Laquidara's February Scrappy Challenge Block was perfect for this quilt.

I placed the blocks on point and filled in with plain black on point squares.  The four-patches were all made with brown or black prints and white-on-white, white beige or grey prints

Here's a close-up of one of the blocks:

I used flannel with a snowflake design on the back.

By the way, he's my oldest grandson and the one who gave me my "grandma" name.  When he started talking he called me Samma and it has stuck to this day with all the grandkids.

Quilts for Christmas!

Here's a peek at five of the six quilts I made this year for my grandchildren.

Quilts for grandkids
The sixth one was being long arm quilted at the time of the photo.
I quilted all the others on my domestic machine.

I will document all of these in the new year.

Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas!

Blue Stars

Quilt Documentation # 155

Here a little lap quilt I just finished.

Blue Stars

This is the January block for Scrappy Challenge 2014 from Judy Laquidara.

The challenge is to use scraps and NOT make another UFO.
The idea is to make blocks (from scraps) until about 10 days before the due date and at that time, use however many blocks were made and finish the project. She says if you only made one block, make a hot pad or pot holder, etc.

I love piecing and using scraps  and sometimes I just want to sew, sew, sew.

This is Judy's pattern “Big T”:

Judy Laquidara design "Big T"
I changed the orientation (dark and light) of the half-square.

I used up this flannel from my stash for the back of the quilt.

I finally got to use up some blue print that was used in at least two other quilts.  I used it for the outside border, a strip on the back and the binding.  Bye, bye blue print.

Spring Time

Quilt Documentation # 147

This is not an original design. I made this quilt last year, after seeing a photo online and thinking what a great idea for using a panel or a piece of fabric that would show off better as a whole rather than cut up.

Regrettably I can't give credit to the designer as I can't find the blog again.
If anyone happens to know whose design it is, I would be happy if you would let me know.

Spring Time

My feature fabric was cut into four sections on slight diagonals.

close-up

I picked colours from the feature fabric for the strips and accent colours.

Striped panel
I used a light cotton batting for a nice light summer quilt.

Spinning Wheels – 2012 UFO Challenge for July

Quilt # 97

One more UFO completed!

Spinning Wheels was my #3, the number picked by Judy Laquidara at Patchwork Times to be completed for the July UFO Challenge.

Spinning Wheels
The blocks were sewn together when I started. The blocks were made using all different stripped fabric along with my own hand-dyed brown fabric and muslin.

Spinning Wheels UFO
I added one border in the same hand dyed fabric.

I quilted the diagonal lines and then stitched spider webs in each square.

I also added some webs along the borders and small spider webs in the corners.

I did not add a label but I signed my name and year on the front of the quilt.

May's FMQ Challenge with Leah Day and Best Friends

These are my first sample pieces using Leah Day's tutorial technique of double stippling. I realized after I completed these that I had covered the whole area a little too well and lost the look of the double stippling.

Double Stippling and Railroad Tracks
So I gave it another try and liked this a lot better.

Second attempt
Quilt #88 - Best Friends

In keeping with my plan of finishing a UFO using the technique of the month, I picked this lap size Trip Around the World. This was started as a demo for a class. This is a fun technique that I've taught several times.

Sue Nickels shared her method of making this in Quilt Craft magazine back in the nineties sometimes.

Best Friends

This is all that was done when I rescued it from the cupboard.

UFO
I also made a sample to see how the technique and thread would work. This is 100% cotton thread and I like OK except for all the lint it produced in the machine.

Here is what the quilting looks like on the quilt top.

I have been following Leah Day for a long time and have used many of her designs on my quilts.  This one was fast and easy as an all over pattern.  Thank you, Leah.

Seeing Stars

Quilt # 48

Seeing Stars
Seeing Stars is a reversible Quilt made using Sharon Pederson's technique from her book Two at a Time.

This technique allows you to "quilt" each block individually by using the stitch and flip method on the reverse side of your block.

detail

I made these star blocks (quarter square triangles) many years ago to practice sewing points and they sat  on the shelf for a long time.

Ohio Star block

I chose to do crazy patchwork on the back side using red scraps.  My rule was that as long as there some red in any value, from lightest pink to darkest red, it was fair game.

Seeing Stars - Reverse side

Batting was added to the block and the patches placed on the batting, stitching through all layers.  The bobbin thread is what is showing on the star side.

detail

Since I was working with 12" blocks, I chose fairly large pieces.

Crazy patchwork

I used a dark red print for the sashing strips on the Star side and was fortunate to still have some of the background fabric from the star blocks.  That became my sashing and binding on the crazy patch side, which helped to ties the two sides together.
