After spending almost 3 weeks in California and Arizona, it's back to the deep freeze and lots of snow. 

Oh well, more time for quilting and playing with artsy stuff!

Quilts for Christmas

My personal quilting challenge for 2014 was to make a quilt for each one of my six grandchildren.

“Medallion” was made for my grandson Mackie and Jesse, who recently moved into their new home. I found out that the decorating was heading towards a neutral palette with touches of copper.

I made this Medallion top a few years ago when teaching classes from my own original design.

The colour scheme was just right, so I took it to Marnie, for long arm quilting.  The back is extra wide flannel, the binding is a solid black cotton.

Jewel Tone Medallion IV

I hope everyone are enjoying the holiday season and that you all had a very Merry Christmas.

I had a great Christmas and now it's time to relax and get down to some serious quilting. I've spent the last few days getting to know my new Bernina, which is just awesome.

Jewel Tone Medallion IV

Lets get back to the quilt documentation. Today we have another medallion, the last in the series, that is completed. Number 2 still needs to be quilted. See Country Stars Medallion and Elephant Walk.

All 4 quilts in this series, uses the same pattern, except for the central 12” block, border #7 made up of 6” blocks and of course different colour schemes.

The colours for this quilt were chosen using Jinny Beyer's colour scheme which includes shading, using a deep dark and and accent, from her book Color Confidence for Quilters.

I also used a Jinny Beyer border print for the centre block, in the 6” blocks and most of the the solid borders.

Christmas Medallion

Seems I like Medallions. Not too many more, I promise.

This Christmas Quilt is made up mostly of christmas prints in red, white and navy.

The centre is a 15” Feathered Star block.

Pieced borders include Nine-patch blocks and a wave of Flying Geese.

The quilting was done on my domestic machine using a combination of stitch-in-the-ditch and stippling.

Country Stars - Medallion I

Medallion I

My quilt this week is another medallion, this is the first one I made in a series of four quilts using the same pattern. Elephant Walk, the very first quilt (#1) on this blog, is third in the series.

I used the same pattern, except for the central 12” block, and border #7 made up of 6” blocks.  This change gives each quilt an original feel.

When making a large quilt, I like to cut swatches of the fabrics I'm going to use, separate them in values and glue them on to a sheet of paper. This allows me to see if I have enough fabric of each value and if my colour scheme is going to work.

This one is slightly smaller than the others. I enlarged the last pieced border, to make a better bed size, when I decided to teach it as a class.

I used a paisley brushed cotton for the back of the quilt, it feels similar to flannel.

When my parents were in a Nursing Home, I would bring them a different quilt for their beds every 3 or 4 weeks, and this one was my Dad's favourite.

Quilt Name: Medallion I

Description: Medallion Quilt – This quilt is an original design. 

Pattern: I don't remember the name of the centre block or where I got the pattern. The 6” blocks are Sawtooth Stars. The other borders are either plain or from traditional designs made up from squares, half-square triangles, flying geese and big & little chain of squares.

Size: 69” x 86”

Fabrics: 100% cotton

Predominant colours: Yellow, gold, turquoise , brown, red.

Construction Techniques: Twelve pieced and plain borders were added around a central square. A striped fabric was used in the central block as well as 2 of the borders.

Back: Paisley brushed cotton

Batting: Polyester

Edge finish: Double fold french binding

Quilting: Machine quilted on domestic sewing machine. Nylon thread on top and black polyester thread on the back. Stitch in the ditch, swirls, feathers.

Celtic, Trapunto and Me

Celtic, Trapunto and Me

My quilt this week is a Celtic Medallion with some added trapunto.

The celtic knot in the central panel of this quilt was started in a Celtic Workshop with Ruth Green from Timmins sponsored by the Kirkland Lake Mile of Gold Quilters Guild.

I used a very dark brown print for the celtic strips which were machine appliqued onto some of my own hand dyed fabric.

When I decided to incorporate this panel into a large quilt, it was difficult to find salmon coloured fabric. I used some prints, more hand dyed as well as the back of some fabrics. The greys are all store bought prints and the dark mottled fabric is my own.

I designed this pattern on graph paper and after adding 2 borders to the central panel, the rest of the quilt was assembled into 12” blocks made up of the squares and flying geese rectangles. The colour of the squares, salmon, grey and dark mottled fabric define the pattern. The whole quilt is on point.

The 12” blocks were then stitched together to make up the top.

A skinny border was added to the outside edges.

Next, the celtic corner designs were appliqued on the salmon coloured section of the top.

I added the trapunto design by machine and then stippled the complete top.

When I look at the back of this quilt reminds of those Optical Illusions pictures where sometimes the design looks recessed and then all of a sudden it looks puffed out.  Click on it and see if you can see that.

I don't quilt as much during the summer months but that year, the celtic, the trapunto and me spent a lot of time together.

This quilt was juried into the 2006 American Quilter’s Society Quilt Exposition, in Nashville, Tennessee and was shown in the 2004 Kirkland Lake Mile of Gold Quilters' Guild Quilt Show and at Quilt Day 3, Kirkland Lake, April 2005.

It has been cold here in Kenogami, but the weatherman is promising temperatures around the -15˚C (5˚F), more or less, all week.  We'll take it.

Quilt Name:  Celtic, Trapunto and Me

Description:  Medallion organization with central Celtic knot within hand dyed field on point. Remaining field of 3” squares and 3” x 6” flying geese are all on point.

Batting:  Cotton and polyester for extra layer under trapunto

Edge finish:  Half inch straight greain binding appied by machine on tope and fine hand on back with mitered corners.

Quilting:  Extra polyester layer in trapunto areas. In ditch, stipple and meander. Medium heavy coverage

Elephant Walk

Week 1 - Quilt 1-


The first quilt I've chosen to document is Elephant Walk, not for any particular reason, I just need to start somewhere. We are going to be all over the place, old quilts, new quilts, bed or wall quilts, you get the picture......

This bed quilt is a medallion design which means you start with central block and keep building out, adding borders around and around.

Elephant Walk is the 3rd in a series of medallion quilts.

I get bored when doing the same thing over and over again, so I really like to use lots of different fabrics in my quilts.  This works really well, as I've stopped buying large pieces of fabric and pretty much stick with FQs.  This way I never run out, I just substitute another fabric.


The key to using forty to fifty fabrics instead of 3 or 4 is all about values.  You can pick 5 or 10 fabrics that all "read" the same.  Line up all your choices, evenly spaced, stand back and squint.  If they all blend together, you can use any of them in place of just one fabric.  If any stand out, remove it.  In the swatch sample above, the 2 strips on the right hand side are from the border print fabric.

After designing and making my first medallion quilt , I decided to teach it as a class. My favourite way of teaching is to make a quilt along with my students and the reason why I'm now the proud owner of four of these quilts, three are finished but #2 is still in the UFO pile and needs to be quilted.

Every quilt uses the same pattern, except for the central 12” block, and border #7 made up of 6” blocks.  This change gives each quilt an original feel.

Elephant Walk was probably started in 2003 but wasn't quilted until 2009.

I like this quilt, it's a colourful happy quilt.

The thermometer says -5˚C (23˚F).

A light fluffy snow is falling, and that's nice after the 3 days of rain we got around New Year's making everything super icy and slippery.

Fabrics:   Border print was purchased on a trip to Arizona.  43 fabrics in 4 values – light, medium light, medium dark and dark were chosen in colours from the print.

Predominant colours:  Gold, green, orange and black with a small amount of turquoise and purple.

Construction Techniques: Twelve pieced and plain borders were added around a central square. All the plain borders are made from the border print,  except border #3 which is made up of 4 large triangles and skinny border #5

Batting: Hobbs 80/20

Edge finish: Double fold french binding – Black with white pin dots
