O Tannenbaum V

This is my last entry for the UFO Challenge 2012 issued by Judy Laquidara at Patchwork Times.  Have a look at what everyone else has accomplished.

This was #9 which is actually the November challenge.  It did not get done in November but I have now completed all of my UFOs from this challenge except for December's and a bit of quilting to finish on my October's challenge.  All the posts for this project can be seen here.

It was a good year for UFO busting, thanks Judy!   Still lots in the pile but it is definitely getting smaller. I'm really trying to complete everything that I start now!

O Tannenbaum V is the fifth in a series of stylized trees.

This is what I started out with this month:

I added the four corners using the 2 same batiks that were in the block.

This will be a cushion, so on to the quilting. I used a piece of white cotton for the back which is now on the inside of the cushion. I love quilting feathers so I just had to make some corner designs.

And here's what the back looked like:

I made a matching piping using some of the green fabric, added it around the front piece.

The back is a 100% cotton brown print to which I added an invisible zipper before sewing to the front section.

I signed and dated it at one edge, using one of the alphabet stitches on my machine.

I did get the top finished, sandwiched and 7 of the blocks are quilted. I still have to come up with a name for this one.

Here it is as a work in progress. The blocks were all made, ready to set.

This sampler was on my UFO Challenge list at Patchwork Times. I completed the top before the end of May which is when the quilt was supposed to be completed, but it wasn't quilted or bound.

But it is now. Has been for a while, just haven't got around to post about it.

My blocks were made while teaching a sampler class. There are still a few stacks of blocks sitting around from more classes.

Since I used the same fabric for the lattice that is in the background of the blocks I added a row of machine embroidery to define the blocks.

I decided to only use 12 blocks on the front of the quilt but added 3 more to the back and used the Schoolhouse roof as my label.

This is what I started out with this month:

I added the four corner triangles using the 2 batiks that were in the block and then 2 borders from my hand dyed fabrics.

The back was pieced from hand dyed fabrics and some left-over batik from the front.

I quilted feathers learned from Diane Gaudynski's online tutorial and stippling in the background very much like O Tannenbaum III.

I stitched the quilt information on one of the pieces before stitching the back together instead of adding a separate label. Much easier.

One more of these to go, I'm really liking the finished products and love quilting feathers.
Number 6 is next and the one I have been dreading.

Cut Loose and Fancy Free

This UFO was #7 on my list for Judy Laquidara's UFO Challenge for an August finish.

So far I have completed every challenge. Feels great to get all these quilts finished.

Cut Loose and Fancy Free was a guild project where a strip was made each month. All the strips but 2 are liberated blocks (no patterns), hence the name.

This is what I started with:

It needed to be set, quilted, labelled and bound. Strips measures 30” long.

I decided to set it simply with plain fabric strips that were cut 2” and 2½” wide and not bother with any additional borders.

I used all the threads in the picture below on the top and emptied several bobbins left over from other projects on the back.

I had originally thought of quilting it with a simple diagonal grid but then remembered Diane Gaudynski's background design that she calls Diane-shiko. I have done this design half this size and that was a lot easier to control, but do I like it even if it is a little wonky in spots.

The back is a light fabric and unfortunately a few of the reds ran when I blocked the piece even through all the fabrics had been washed.

 Instead of a label I stitched the information right on the quilt back prior to quilting.

The binding was cut across a white and navy striped fabric. 

Happy to have this one done.  Number 11 is the pick to complete in September.

Spinning Wheels – 2012 UFO Challenge for July

One more UFO completed!

Spinning Wheels was my #3, the number picked by Judy Laquidara at Patchwork Times to be completed for the July UFO Challenge.

The blocks were sewn together when I started. The blocks were made using all different stripped fabric along with my own hand-dyed brown fabric and muslin.

I added one border in the same hand dyed fabric.

I quilted the diagonal lines and then stitched spider webs in each square.

I also added some webs along the borders and small spider webs in the corners.

I did not add a label but I signed my name and year on the front of the quilt.

Tag Placemats – 2012 UFO Challenge for June

It is going to be a busy week-end, so I'm posting now and will link up to the June 2012 UFO Challenge tomorrow.

The number picked by Judy Laquidara at Patchworks Time for June  was 12. 

 My number 12 was surely the easiest of all my UFOs. A few hours and all done. Do you ever wonder when you put things off when it is so easy to just get at it and do it.

A lot of my UFOs seem to be projects that I started while teaching a class and then just get put away never to surface again. This challenge is a great motivator. I'm trying really hard to get finished anything that I start now.

This placemat design was adapted from Dianne S. Hire pattern's “Chase”.

So here are my 5 placemats finished, 3 others were previously completed for a set of 8.

Two basic colour groups were selected – one for background and one for the unblocks (as Dianne S. Hire calls her technique) for the centre design.

Several blues were chosen for the background and bright batiks for the unblocks.

I used the pillowcase method and stitched a line along the edges to stabilize them.

Simple wiggly lines of quilting about an inch apart was all that was needed to get these off the UFO pile.

I did get the top finished but unfortunately it did not get to the Long Arm Quilter as yet.  But it will!
The back is done and the binding is ready to go on.

This is my UFO Challenge 2012 for April. A challenge issued by Judy Laquidara at Patchwork Times.

#10 – DONE!

This is my fourth UFO to be completed. I finished March's before the deadline but could not link it up as I was travelling and had no computer access.

O Tannenbaum III is (obviously) the third in a series of stylized trees. O tannenbaum I was made up of 4 blocks as a Christmas table topper. I had good intentions of making another one and made 4 more blocks but did not like them together, so I will make 4 wall hangings. (2 down – 2 to go)   See I and II here.

This is what I started out with this month:

I found another batik in the 'right' colours and added 2 borders.

The quilting features some feathers as learned from the Diane Gaudynski free motion quilting workshop, and stippling in the background. Love quilting feathers!

This is what it looked liked at the time.  Notice there was an extra column of flying geese on the left hand side?

After having it sandwiched and started quilting, I had a good look at it to try and figure out what I did not like about it.

I folded the border over that column of geese and liked it a lot better.  So I remove the flying geese and replaced the border before doing anymore quilting.  Much better, don't you think?
