NOFA Fun Day - June 18, 2011

Northern Ontario Fibre Artists

Pots of wax

Once a year, we have a Fun Day to give us a chance to try out new techniques, that take more time than our regular meetings allow.

This year, we decided to play with WAX.

Our two choices were Encaustics and Soya Wax Resist.

Marnie offered the family cottage at Ice Chest Lake for the days activities.

All lined up on the dock!  Click on picture for closer look!
For most of us, Encaustics was a brand new adventure, knowing very little about the process but raring to go.

Here a very brief and basic description in case you are not familiar with Encaustics.  It involves "painting with coloured wax".  What we made were Encaustics Collages where fabrics, paper, embellishments of all kinds are imbedded in layers of wax.  The wax is heated and moved around on the board or stiff paper.

Karen had previously taken an Encaustics workshop and volunteered to be our morning project instructor. She brought the wax and all the supplies needed to get us started.

Marie provided us with three 12” x 12” boards each, very precisely cut for us by her husband Rick. He thought he might be off by a smidgen on one or two boards. I'm sure that if he would have seen our end products, he would have seen he had no need for worry.

So after getting fortified by Kit's yummy Stickly Buns and Fresh Fruit Salad, we were off and running.

Here are some of our efforts for the day.

It's a bit messy!

LUNCH - Pot luck salads and Marnie's  BBQ Burgers were enjoyed sitting out on the dock. The day was perfect, bright and sunny but not too hot.

Then it was time for the Soya Wax Resist.

Soya Wax Resist

This was new to all of us, but with some instructions found online, we dove right in.

I had tried doing batik many years ago and this was so easy and much more fun by comparison.

Here are some of the work in progress and a few results.

It was a really fun day, enjoyed by all.

Have a great day,

Terry

Bent Out Of Square

Quilt # 36

Bent Out Of Square

This is a little quilt that I made last fall as a class sample. It measures 37” X 46”. The pattern is from Karla Alexander's book Stack a New Deck. I really like this technique where squares of fabric are stacked, cut and shuffled to get a wide variety of colour combinations in each block.

block variations

All the blocks for this quilt were made entirely out of batiks, using only 6 Fat Quarters .

I made these blocks using the same technique I use to make log cabin blocks but the free-form cutting gives each sets of blocks it's own “bent” out of square look. It is very freeing and fun experience.

Wandering Clover quilting design
I free-motion quilted with a variegated multi coloured thread using a Leah Day's design called Wandering Clover although my version wanders a lot more (stippling) with the odd clover design here and there.

back
The back of Bent out of Square is my own hand-dyed muslin.
Label - sorta

This is a perfect baby quilt size and I have recently made two of them. You will see them in the next two posts.

Red, White and Blue Sampler

Quilt #35

Red, White and Blue Sampler
This sampler is probably the 3rd or 4th sampler quilt I made. It finally got completed in either 2005 or 2006. How do I know? It was displayed at our Guild's 2006 Quilt Show. So without a label that is my best guess. So much easier (and accurate) when a label is attached.

Block Setting

When teaching sampler classes, I make up blocks along with the students.  Small variations on previously made blocks help students visualize what can be done using any of the techniques.

Striped Eight Point Star

This star block is part of the Y-Seam (Set-in seam) Class along with the Attic Windows Block.

The Circle Wreath is from one of the Applique Classes,  buttonhole stitch on the leaves and how to apply bias strip for circles or curved stems.

Circle Wreath Block

The setting for this quilt is from Judy Martin's The Block Book.

It was long arm machine quilted by Marnie Mascioli of Calico Cat. The name of the quilting pattern is “Dizzy”.

Blue on Blue

Quilt #34
Blue on Blue

I made this very first sampler quilt as a class sample and used as many techniques as I could find at the time. This was made in the early nineties, I was mostly self-taught and had been quilting for approximately 5 years.

There is a mixture of hand and machine work in this quilt.

Grandmother's Flower Garden - english piecing
This was a quilt-as-you-go quilt, and I did make one more quilt using this method but found I did not enjoy the assembling although the quilting part was certainly easier.

Attic Windows - Y-seam piecing
I have since made several samplers and have had most of them quilted by a long arm quilter.

Schoolhouse - paper-pieced roof & diagram piecing

Although samplers aren't everyone's cup of tea, I find it an excellent means of teaching different techniques in a small format. One block – one technique.

Label

Choosing fabric, colours and values carefully can make all the difference in uniting the blocks.

Blue on Blue is monochromatic, made up of 7 fabrics – 2 light values, 3 medium and 2 darks.
