NOFA Meeting October 18, 2014

All seven members of the Northern Ontario Fibre Artists met for our fall meeting on Saturday, October 18th .

Northern Ontario Fibre Artists
As usual, we had a good showing of projects, for our Show and Tell and we discussed a little business.

Here are some of our work in progress and finished projects.  The postcards are from kits that were exchanged during our summer retreat:

After a yummy pot luck lunch, we viewed a slide show of the Burlington Fibre Content Show and then headed back up for a fun round robin workshop.

Marnie had participated in a similar project with Kathy Wylie and friends and she led us through the various steps.

Just getting started
We all started with the same size base of fabric and batting supplied by Marnie. The idea was to add layers in a limited time frame. We had 30 minutes to make our background from cotton scraps.

We then picked names and everyone worked on someone else's piece.

Our time limit was now 20 minutes per round and we could choose from the different piles of either tulle/organza/sheers, ribbons/wools/lace or shiny/glitzy/textured fabrics.

As the piece progressed you could pick from the ones not already on the piece.

Here is how Marnie's piece progressed:

Marnie and her background

Jane added ribbons, lace and wool

Marie added textured leaves

And Terry added more leaves from the organza, tulle pile
And this is how everyone else's piece looked at the start and finish.

 Very fun project.

This is what mine looks like completed!

Hope to see all the other finished pieces at our next meeting.

Juried Show Entries and Printmaking Workshop

Juried Shows

A lot of exciting things have been going on in the last little while.

The Northern Ontario Fibre Artists had a group piece “Seven Create” juried into the Canadian Quilters Association National Juried Show to be held in St. Catherines in June.

I will do a separate post on this piece a little later.

I also had two pieces of my own juried in  Ghost Ship - Ciudad de Inca and Due North were both accepted.

And last week I received a phone call telling me that 2 other pieces had been accepted into the 7th Annual Juried Contemporary Art Exhibition 2014 held in Kirkland Lake at the Museum of Northern History.

Printmaking Workshop

This past week-end, I attended a Printmaking Workshop at the Temiskaming Art Gallery. A beautiful exhibition by five area printmakers was being shown at the Gallery.

All five participated in this workshop in one way or another.

It was a well organized, with a lot going on at all times.

We printed by hand as well as on a printing press.

This is my design and the stamp I carved (I changed the background to speed things up):

Original design and carved stamp
The printing included  embossing, printing one colour and rainbow roll, adding collage to printing and printing on watercolour.

Here are some of my results:

Print on paper collage
Monoprinting on plexi was also added to the mix.

It was very informative and a lot of fun.

Cruising

Quilt Documentation #155

Cruising
This quilt was started in a workshop with Sylvia Pippen while on a quilting cruise a year ago. For me, it's a cruising memory but those little fish and dolphins really seem to be cruising as well, hence the name.

My main interest in taking this class was to learn sashiko which I enjoyed thoroughly.  Japanese Sashiko thread is made of loosely twisted,  long-staple cotton and is very strong.
For the sashiko circles, I used an indigo dyed piece from one of our NOFA workshop experiment.

However, applique is a different matter. I did learn a different applique technique, which glues the edges down prior to stitching. It made the stitching easier for sure but hasn't turned me in anymore of a hand applique fan. I keep trying, maybe something will click.

Fins are from a silk marbled in a G&S Dyes workshop many years ago.
The process:

I decided not to buy a kit but use my own fabrics instead. I hand dyed the background (and the back) especially for this piece. It is painted with liquid dyes (Procion H).
The dolphins were the last applique so look a little better (I think)

I knew I didn't have any “dolphin” fabric so I found and bought some in an Australian quilt shop while on the cruise.

The rest were hand dyed cottons and marbled silk from my stash.

Sylvia hand quilts after all her applique is done. Since I don't hand quilt, I added the borders to the background and free motioned quilted prior to doing the applique.

The pattern for this quilt is in Sylvia's book Paradise Stitched and is loaded with beautiful pictures and instructions of her gorgeous quilts.

And The Beat Goes On

Documented Mixed Media #5

And The Beat Goes On - 12" x 16" canvas

This past Saturday, I attended a Collage Workshop with well-known Timmins artist Catherine Cribbs.

We used recycled canvases, papers and prints from the teacher's stash as well as any of our own decorative papers and supplies.

These included Cathy's stamped papers and several type of prints, some of my own paper fabric, cheesecloth, scrapbook paper and previously painted paper and dyed paper towels, sparkles, ink, fabric and threads.

For inspiration, Cathy had us pick phrases and quotes from an envelope.  My was “And the beat goes on”.

My take was to go with repetition and hoped for some rhythm.

The morning was spent making large sheets of papers from tissue paper and a variety of papers and other items.  They were not dry enough to use then but can be cut up for  future collages.....or very possibly fibre art!

This was an informative and very fun workshop.

I will certainly be making more of these.

A World of Their Own

Quilt #92

A World of Their Own

Here is a quilt that I painted  with Tsukineko Inks in a class with Patt Blair in April at the Empty Spools Seminar in Asilomar, California.

I always knew I wanted to make a quilt from this picture and when Patt told us we could use one of our own photographs for this class, I knew right away that it was going to be this one.

photo inspiration

This is my grandson Mackenzie, when about 9 or 10 years old (he is now 21) and my niece's dog, Bailey sitting on the front of our pontoon boat.

A couple pictures of work in progress:
Day 2
Day 4
The painting part of this quilt was done in class. I have tried painting on fabric before and I this is my favourite by far.

I quilted it pretty heavily using three different threads. A variegated YLI Variations for Bailey, the dog, several WonderFil Rayons and Invisafil for Mackie and Valdani Hand-Overdyed for the water.

It took a while to get the nerve to get started with the quilting but then it all flowed really well.

I decided to use the sleeve as my label.  I tried this on a quilt recently and liked the result.

I am so pleased with the way this quilt turned out, I love it.

It was the best workshop ever with a wonderful fun teacher, at a great location. I went with three friends from Canada and a good time was had by all.

Thanks to Patt Blair for sharing so much with us and a very enjoyable week at Empty Spools Seminar.

And here is Patt with her beautiful mountain lion painted quilt.  The quilting is amazing.
