Competitions & Work in Progress

Competitions

I'm happy to tell you that I am now your hostess for the Call for Entry page  at The Needle and Thread Network. Check it out, lots going on.

On that note, got some great news this morning. Our fibre art group The Northern Ontario Fibre Artists' entry “Seven Create” (see at the top right of this page) was juried into The Grand National, Kitchener, ON.

And personally, I had four pieces juried into the 8th Annual Juried Contemporary Art Exhibition 2015 at the Museum of Northern History, Kirkland Lake.

Quite an exciting couple of days!

Work in Progress

This is what I have been working on and it is getting close to the finish stage.

Just wondering......do any of these blocks ring a bell? It's a few years old.  If yes, write me a note in the comments.

More later!

Happy Quilting,

Terry

Here is our entry “Seven Create”. It measures 10 feet by 55 inches.

Three x 3

Three x 3 is a mixed media piece I made especially to enter in the 7th Annual Juried Contemporary Exhibit at the Museum of Northern History in Kirkland Lake, ON.  See previous post here.

Three x 3

The theme was Nature’s Enduring Bounty and use of natural material was encouraged.

I used three techniques and made nine 5" x 7" canvases arranged on a 3 x 3 grid.

Unfortunately, I did not take any pictures of work in progress.

I started with pages from a book of poems which I gessoed and stained with coffee.

I needed to glue the pages to muslin in order to be able to attach the natural branches.

When I applied the glue, the coffee stain (not waterproof) mixed with the glue and puddled on the paper.

This was not the look I was going for but I thought it worked.

First technique:

I used real branches from my Linden tree and attached (couched?) them to my prepared background.

The fabric was then wrapped around the canvases.

Second technique:

I reproduced the design of the branches by painting them on with acrylics.

Third technique:

I made stamps from "fun foam" and stamped on the background.

My background panel was then wrapped with a piece of my own hand-dyed muslin and the little canvases glued on.

Tango is Back!

After a year of travelling.

Tango - 28" x 40"

Tango was a semi-finalist in the Quilt category of the Creativ Festival's 25th SILVER anniversary 2012 Designer Style Challenge, Toronto.  I did not have a problem with this, I just did not know.

It came home last week.

I blogged about making it here.

I obviously did not read the fine print very well, as I was totally unaware that the semi-finalist entries would remain with Janome for a year when I entered this challenge.

Note to self (and to anyone competing): READ THE FINE PRINT.

Part of the letter from Janome with my returned quilt said:

We have had the pleasure of showing your quilt around Canada at various consumer shows for the past year. In between shows it's been hanging in our office. I must tell you it has inspired many people! Well done!

Nice,huh?

I'm glad it's back.
