THREAD SCULPTURE

ART PROMPT - #9 - Add wire

Week 2

I have been thinking of making a soft sculpture from snipped thread for a while and when the “add wire” prompt came up, I knew this would be it.

Thread Sculpture

I purchased this Madeira Wash Away Avalon Ultra a few years ago but had not used it until now. I tested a little piece to see how it would dissolve,as it is pretty thick and was surprised that it did, very quickly. It was easy to sew through and only had to sit in lukewarm water for a couple of minutes to dissolve.

This is the work in progress:

pattern from wax paper
Thread sandwich
I stitched straight lines to stabilize and then in circles over the whole thing.  I used dark red thread on top and variegated thread in the bobbin.

Stabilizing with straight lines
top before soaking - red thread

back before soaking- variegated thread

Dried after soaking - adding wire

It measures 13" from the top of the base and 11" across at widest point.

Three x 3

Three x 3 is a mixed media piece I made especially to enter in the 7th Annual Juried Contemporary Exhibit at the Museum of Northern History in Kirkland Lake, ON.  See previous post here

Three x 3

The theme was Nature’s Enduring Bounty and use of natural material was encouraged.

I used three techniques and made nine 5" x 7" canvases arranged on a 3 x 3 grid.

Unfortunately, I did not take any pictures of work in progress.

I started with pages from a book of poems which I gessoed and stained with coffee.

I needed to glue the pages to muslin in order to be able to attach the natural branches.

When I applied the glue, the coffee stain (not waterproof) mixed with the glue and puddled on the paper.

This was not the look I was going for but I thought it worked.

First technique

I used real branches from my Linden tree and attached (couched?) them to my prepared background.

The fabric was then wrapped around the canvases.

Second technique

I reproduced the design of the branches by painting them on with acrylics.

Third technique:

I made stamps from "fun foam" and stamped on the background.

My background panel was then wrapped with a piece of my own hand-dyed muslin and the little canvases glued on.

ART PROMPT - #9 - Add wire

Week 1

Nothing to show, it has been a very busy week.

But I have an idea!!

And it will involve this:

next art prompt project

lots of thread
This little bucket sits on the floor beside my sewing machine for catching my thread ends. This is at least 2 years' worth, maybe more.

bucket of thread
Hope it works.

See you next week,

Terry

ART PROMPT - #8 - Add a strong diagonal

Greeting Cards and Postcards - Albatross Stamp

Greeting cards

After taking the printmaking workshop, I really wanted to make another stamp. I liked the
4” x 6” format and since I also wanted to make greeting cards and postcards, it was the perfect size.

I found a picture of an albatross with a strong diagonal. This is my pattern and my carved stamp.

pattern and stamp
I'm not sure what the product is. It is softer than lino but firmer than the soft-kut that I have used before.

I experimented with making greeting cards. Some were printed with Screen Printing Ink and some with Jacquard Textile Color.

Screen Printing ink on light blue cardstock

Screen Printing ink on white cardstock - added watercolour paint after printing

Jacquard Textile Color on white cardstock - added watercolour paint before printing

Jacquard Textile Color on heavy paper - added watercolour paint after  printing - machine stitching

Also made a couple of postcards.

Jacquard Textile Color on own handdyed cotton - machine stitching & satin-stitch edges

Jacquard Textile Color on silk and organza collage - machine stitching & satin-stitch edges

Still lots to play with and so many other options to try.

more printed fabric to play with

Juried Show Entries and Printmaking Workshop

Juried Shows

A lot of exciting things have been going on in the last little while.

The Northern Ontario Fibre Artists had a group piece “Seven Create” juried into the Canadian Quilters Association National Juried Show to be held in St. Catherines in June.

I will do a separate post on this piece a little later.

I also had two pieces of my own juried in  Ghost Ship - Ciudad de Inca and Due North were both accepted.

Due North
And last week I received a phone call telling me that 2 other pieces had been accepted into the 7th Annual Juried Contemporary Art Exhibition 2014 held in Kirkland Lake at the Museum of Northern History.

Printmaking Workshop

This past week-end, I attended a Printmaking Workshop at the Temiskaming Art Gallery. A beautiful exhibition by five area printmakers was being shown at the Gallery.

All five participated in this workshop in one way or another.

It was a well organized, with a lot going on at all times.

We printed by hand as well as on a printing press.

This is my design and the stamp I carved (I changed the background to speed things up):

Original design and carved stamp
The printing included  embossing, printing one colour and rainbow roll, adding collage to printing and printing on watercolour.

Here are some of my results:
Embossing on paper

Blue and black print on paper

Print on paper collage
Monoprinting on plexi was also added to the mix.

It was very informative and a lot of fun.
